It is truly impossible to go to a Lebanese restaurant and not cheat on your diet. It is even harder to stay fit when you live in the Middle East, especially in Lebanon. Because the food is amazing, and the people who make it are even greater, Lebanese food is all over the world. Here are 10 delicious dishes to eat with grilled chicken, meat, and fish.

1. Hummus

Whenever I meet international students and tell them that I am Lebanese, their response is ‘HUMMUS!’ Why? Because it is one of the most famous Lebanese dishes worldwide. Hummus is  dip made from cooked and mashed chickpeas, blended with tahini, olive oil, lemon juice, salt and garlic. It is usually eaten with grilled and fried meat, chicken and fish, as well as fries, and typical salads. It is a must on every Lebanese table. 

2. Tabouleh

The Tabouleh is one of the healthiest Lebanese dishes because it is a salad. As it accompanies Lebanese main dishes, it is  made of tomatoes, chopped parsley, mint, onion, often bulgur and seasoned with olive oil, lemon juice and salt. It is served with lettuce or cabbage.

3. Kibbeh Nayyeh

This national dish consists of minced raw lamb or beef, mixed with bulgur and spices. Kibbeh Nayyeh is usually presented with olive oil, bread, salt and pepper. It is usually eaten with Arabic bread, onion, and salads such as Fattoush

4. Warak Enab

Influenced by the Ottoman Empire, Lebanon has made this typical platter. Warak Enab are grape leaf stuffed vegetables, lamb, tomato and rice. Olive oil is often used to moisten or secure the wraps. They are usually eaten with Greek yogurt.

5. Mujadara

This is one of our favourite dishes, here in Lebanon. It is made out of red beans, bulgur wheat and fried onions. Here is what you need to make a good mujadara:

– 400g dried red beans

– 1 litre cold water

– 2 onions

– olive oil and vegetable oil

– salt, pepper and cumin

– 100g coarse bulgur wheat

6. Batata Harra

We do love fries. But here, our potatoes come in different sizes, shapes, and even taste. The Batata Harra is a dish made out of potatoes, red peppers, chili and garlic, all fried together in olive oil. Succulent! 

7. Shish Taouk

Every table needs chicken. The Lebanese traditional chicken platter, called Shish Taouk consists of chicken cubes that are marinated with yogurt and  lemon juice or tomato purée, then skewered and grilled. It is typically eaten with garlic paste.

8. Arnabit

I known cauliflower is not a vegetable you may like to eat. But the Lebanese cuisine transforms it into a delicious appetizer that is a must on our table. It consists of cauliflower  roasted with olive oil, until it gets brown and crispy, served with a seriously garlicky tahini dressing on top.

9. Cheese Sambousek

They look like mozzarella sticks, but really, they are not. Cheese Sambousek are square-shaped small pies, filled with a combination of cheese and parsley then oven baked. Just like mozzarella sticks, they are served as starters. 

10. Sfiha

We love bread, because it is freshly made in Lebanon. This is why we combine bread with meat, fish, chicken, garlic, cheese, yogurt, and vegetables. Sfiha is an Arab pizza-like dish that consists of lamb or veal, onion, tomato, and red chili. It is usually eaten with either lemon juice or Greek yogurt. 

Lebanese dishes are delicious, and these are musts on every table. However, these are not the only ones. We have so many good dishes that you are guaranteed to find the one you love!
