Summer fun can be expensive, but don’t worry, there are things you can do to keep expenditures at a minimum and still enjoy yourself!

It’s so easy for families to overspend during the summer holidays. After all, there are six weeks which you are meant to fill to keep your kids happy. But it can get expensive when you book a holiday, even if it’s just for a few days. Before the summer is out, you could end up high in debt. But there are a few small changes families can make during the summer vacation season to save money.

Avoid using childcare throughout the holidays

Childcare during the summer months can end up costing parents a fortune. You need someone to look after your kids, but you don’t want to end up spending more than you earn! Therefore, you should try and find a friend or family member to look after them during the summer break. Your parents could be happy to help look after your little ones for a couple of weeks during the summer. Or you may want to ask a friend who is already a mummy if she wouldn’t mind having your kids for a couple of days. It might also be possible to ask your employer for flexible work hours during the summer. That way, you can work at home and still be able to look after your kids for a couple of days during the week. These small changes could save you hundreds of pounds when it comes to childcare during the summer months.

Go on days out rather than one big holiday

You might be surprised to learn that a family holiday in the summer costs most families two whole months of wages! That’s a significant amount that could cause you and your family financial struggles for the next few months. So, it might be worth considering taking your holiday later and just spending the summer doing days out instead. There are plenty of great places in the UK for the whole family to visit. Why not try a theme park or the beach for a fantastic time everyone will enjoy? By looking online, you should be able to find many great ideas for the perfect day out ideas. But even spending the day indoors doing fun activities, could prove just as relaxing. A movie day for instance, will go down a treat with the kids without costing you an arm and a leg. With all this money saving up, you can then consider booking your main holiday at a cheaper time during the year — bon voyage!

Look for free days at museums for kids

A lot of families flock to the most well-known museums, such as The National History Museum in London, during the summer months. But these can end up costing you a fortune in the summertime. Therefore, why not look for more local museums which offer free days for the kids. It’s a great way to educate and entertain them without having to spend that much. You can also look for local, free outdoor events which are in plenty during the summer holidays. Not only are they great fun for the family, but a lot of the time they are free to attend!

One more thing. Remember to buy school uniform at the start of the break rather than towards the end to save some money. Shops usually raise their prices at the last minute knowing that busy parents will be willing to spend more just to get everything sorted. So be one step ahead of them and enjoy the summer with a victory smile!
