Feminism, global warming and changing the curriculum are on the agenda — not for parliamentary debate, but for students at Marylebone boys’ school.

After 12-weeks of Shout Out UK’s Political Literacy Course, a group of students at Marylebone boys’ school put their political knowledge and public speaking skills into practice yesterday, when they gave speeches on issues they care about in front of teachers, students and parents.

The Political Literacy Course is Shout Out UK’s flagship programme, designed to engage young people in politics and equip them with the tools to better understand the world around them.

The course covers an introduction to the British parliamentary system, political theory, media analysis, international relations and debating skills.

Whilst warming up their vocal chords before the showcase, workshop facilitator Beth Munro asked the boys what they learnt from the course. ‘The difference between left and right-wing’, many students said, as well as ‘what different parties stand for’ and ‘that the media can be bias towards different political parties’ — crucial knowledge for engaging in the democratic process.

Speeches covered a wide variety of topics, demonstrating students’ breadth of interests.

One student discussed the difference between equity and equality and when probed by a classmate to provide a real-life example, eloquently explained progressive taxation. Another called for changing the curriculum to give students more choice over what they study, while one questioned what it means to be a man in the twenty-first century and discussed how society and the media can perpetuate damaging stereotypes.

The young men touched on subjects from religion and global conflict to hate crime, freedom of speech and the benefits of video gaming, demonstrating their ability to teach politicians a thing or two. They affirmed just why programmes such as that of Shout Out UK — which not only equips students with skills and knowledge to develop their opinions, but also provides them with the space to voice them — are so vital.
