#LetsTalkMentalHealth is a short film produced by Shout Out UK that explores what it is like to live with a variety of mental health conditions. The film will be released online on the 10th of October 2017 – World Mental Health Day.
The ‘talking heads’ film will be a mosaic of 10 interviewees suffering from various mental health disorders; varying from bipolar, to schizophrenia, to anorexia. We will also be releasing the 10 full interviews.
Mental health affects our emotional, psychological and social functions and is of crucial concern for all people of all ages. One in four people will experience a mental health problem at some point in their lives. However, even though so many people are affected, there is still a significant social stigma attached to mental illnesses and too many people with mental health problems experience forms of discrimination and isolation from society in general. Indeed, nearly nine out of ten people with mental health problems say that stigma and discrimination have a negative effect on their lives.
Shout Out UK would like to stress the importance of presenting such a significant topic that is still misunderstood and misrepresented in our everyday lives. Opening up about mental illnesses should not be a taboo topic, but rather a way for people to communicate and explore different ways on how to recover or being able to live with and manage their condition. #LetsTalkMentalHealth is one way in which we believe this dialogue can occur.
