Due to travel restrictions on foreign holidays, an increasing number of UK holidaymakers are choosing to ditch the long-haul breaks in favour of a staycation. According to research, Google has seen a 500 per cent increase in searches for staycations in the last year due to Covid-19.

Although international travel is now permitted, many of us are still opting for a humble staycation, with bookings up 300 per cent since the first lockdown.

If you’re planning a staycation this year like many other Brits, you may be wondering what to pack. That’s why we’ve put together our top tips to make the most out of a small suitcase.

1. Don’t forget about the volatile British weather

Almost every Brit will have experienced the changeable UK weather. One minute it could be sunny, the next you could be caught in a downpour. To prepare for all eventualities, it’s best to pack a raincoat, pashmina and plenty of layers to cover up with if necessary.

2. Pack versatile clothing

If you only have a small luggage allowance, you’ll want to pack clothes that you can dress up and down and wear more than once.

When packing light, don´t forget to pack a couple of summer blouses that can save you from the chilly days and help you come up with a smarter outfit.

3. Don’t forget about tech

As well as clothing, you may also want to think about what tech you are going to pack. If you are going to be somewhere without a television, you may wish to bring a tablet or streaming device so you can keep up with your favourite series or watch films whilst you’re there.

Another great item to pack is an e-reader. Rather than cart a few heavy novels with you on your staycation, an e-reader provides a great alternative if you have limited room and tend to speed through books.

To really get the party started, you may also wish to consider a speaker too!

4. Camping essentials

If you’re going camping, then you may need some additional extras. Before pitching your tent, you may want to consider packing the following:

  • A sleeping bag
  • Pillow
  • A table and camping chairs
  • A portable charger
  • A small BBQ
  • A fire starter
  • Weather-appropriate clothing and rain gear (windbreakers are best!)

Although packing can be stressful (especially if you’re trying to pack light!), it needn’t be. By packing clothing that is multi-functional and can be dressed up and down, to packing space-saving tech — you too can pack light successfully.

Now, all that’s left to do is enjoy your staycation — bon voyage!
