  • A Sad Direction: One Direction singer, Liam Payne, died of ‘multiple traumatic injuries’ after falling from a third-floor hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina. An emergency call by the hotel’s manager revealed there was an ‘aggressive man who could be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.’ Several types of prescription and non-prescription medications were found in his room. Payne was 31 years old.
  • You Are What You Drink: A new study found ten ‘target’ chemicals that don’t break down in nature in bottled and tap water across the UK and China. PFAS or toxic ‘forever chemicals’ have been linked to various health concerns, including increased cancer risk and impaired liver function. However, filtering or boiling your water can lower the levels of PFAS by 50-90 per cent, says Prof. Stuart Harrad.

  • Measuring World Poverty: A new report by the U.N. Development Program and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative at the University of Oxford reveals that over 1.1 billion people worldwide live in acute poverty. Over half are children under the age of 18 with  40 per cent of those who are acutely poor living in conflict-torn and fragile countries.
  • A Ban on Baby Buying: Italy’s new surrogacy ban which prevents couples from going abroad to have a baby via a surrogate has been called ‘inhumane.’ Prime Minister Georgia Meloni said the law was a ‘rule of common sense, against the exploitation of the female body and children.’
