Our free train-the-trainer programme equips educators to teach digital citizenship and counter mis and disinformation

As teens struggle to tell news from ads, our new Wisconsin-based training helps educators close the gap. “Click Smart, Think Smart” is a free, grant-funded media literacy training programme for Wisconsin educators and youth professionals—available online and in person. The programme trains participants to spot misinformation, teach responsible digital citizenship, and help protect teens from harmful online content.

Studies show that nearly 96% of U.S. teens use the internet every day, yet fewer than 18% can distinguish between news, ads, opinion, and entertainment. In Wisconsin, 41% of young people are reported to be on social media hourly, but fewer than 50% of schools have a digital learning plan to educate young people on how to engage online. As bad actors spread misinformation and disinformation, alienated and isolated children and young people can be drawn to harmful content. Combined with low levels of media literacy, the well-being of teens across the nation is at risk.

The free train-the-trainer programme is designed to foster digital citizenship and give Wisconsin-based educators and youth practitioners the tools they need to help kids navigate today’s complex social media landscape. Participants will also learn strategies to strengthen critical thinking so young people can become thoughtful, informed members of their communities.

This programme is currently offered exclusively in Wisconsin and has been vetted by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI).  SOUK’s specialist trainers will provide instruction using an expert-developed toolkit covering AI misinformation, digital learning plans, and civic engagement, aligned to Wisconsin state standards. Participants will also gain access to a growing network of educators and youth practitioners, newsletters, and updated materials.

Spaces are available on the training program through August 2026, both online and in person.
